The Qualitative Impact Protocol (QuIP)

The QuIP uses narrative data to identify drivers of change in specified domains by purposively sampled respondents in a way that minimizes contribution bias and does not require a control group. It enables intended beneficiaries of an activity to provide credible feedback about intended and unintended outcomes, and the commissioner to understand what change can be attributed to.

Typical Use Case

It was first used to explore how development interventions were affecting individual and household livelihoods and wellbeing in the context of complex rural transformations taking place in Ethiopia and Malawi. Since then it has been used in a wide range of contexts, including (for example) to assess microfinance services in India, health training in Uganda, factory working conditions in Mexico, and urban community development in the UK.
